Polio Awareness Campaign (PAC)

Dear all,

An introduction to PAC:

The Polio Awareness Campaign (PAC) is primarily aimed at creating awareness among the community of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) on polio and also raising funds for polio eradication. After 20 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all as it is still endemic in four remaining countries in the world namely Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded US$255 million to Rotary International (RI) in the global effort to eradicate polio. In response to the new US$255 million Gates Foundation grant, Rotary will raise US$100 million in matching funds. In November 2007, RI received a US$100 million Gates Foundation grant, which Rotary committed to match by raising US$100 million. The two Gates Foundation challenge grants now total US$355 million. Rotary International’s matching effort in response is called Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, which must be completed by 30 June 2012.

RACUTP is participating in Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge by aiming to raise RM3500 (approximately US$1000) or more in organizing the Polio Awareness Campaign within UTP. All UTP students and staff are encouraged to participate in PAC. All proceeds will be contributed to the PolioPlus Fund to support Rotary’s dream of a polio-free world.

PAC is the pioneering program for future community services in UTP involving global effort. This campaign carries the aspiration to improve international understanding and goodwill as the UTP community is made aware of the polio problem and become part of the solution. PAC will also help uphold RACUTP and RI and their roles in responding to the needs, problems and opportunities of the community and worldwide.

RACUTP now needs help in collecting donations from the UTP community. We will be carrying out a donation drive on this event to show that Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS doesn not forget that people outside this community is still struggling to live and we are here and we ' DO CARE'.

MEDICAL Camp 2010

On 6th March 2010, the Rotaract Club of Universiti Teknologi Petronas has successfully organised free health screening Medical Camp 2010 at Tesco Ipoh. The objectives of this programme are to increase the awareness of public about the importance of having good health, provide free checkups for all and to promote healthy lifestyle.
This programme was well received by the residents of Ipoh. In this medical camp, we had provided free blood pressure and glucose level test, BMI test, cancer awareness and healthy lifestyle campaign, which were conducted by the Jabatan Kesihatan Kinta. There was also Blood Donation Drive, which was handled by Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun. There are also free eye checking conducted by Focus Point Optical Shop. To attract more crowds, committees distributed the flyers around Tesco area to invite people to join the medical check-up and to ask them to donate their blood.
During the checking, the nurses in-charge would convey and explain the correct way to take care of heath, for example the suggested level of sugar needed by our body and how to maintain an ideal level. Advices such as drinking more water and taking frequent exercises were given. Questions and answers between them will make the public gain much more information regarding medical cases. Therefore, it will enhance the public to concern more on their health by gaining a continuous advice by the hospital.
With the kind contribution of corporate sponsors – CIMB Bank, Tesco Ipoh and Roche, this programme can run successfully. The Medical Camp officially started at 11 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m. with the total of 241 participants for the basic health check-up and 38 successful blood donors. The day was also graced by the attendance of 7 Rotarians and 10 Rotaractors. Mr Zulkarnan Abdul, the advisor of RACUTP and senior manager of UTP staff also attended the event. Before ending the day, as a short closing ceremony, Rotarian Arthur, President of Rotary Kinta and advisor of RACUTP presented a small token of souvenir to all the sponsor companies and the health centres involved.
RACUTP is proud to have played a role in helping to increase public awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Being able to be a part of this event and having the chance to give something back to the society left an imprint in everyone of the committees’ heart forever.

ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN (ROSEC)

Held in collaboration with HSE WEEK from the 12^th February to 3^rd March

The Road Safety Campaign (ROSEC) is primarily aimed at bringing awareness to the students and staff of Univesrtiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) as well as the students and public around UTP on the importance of Road Safety related practices in daily life. It is a common fact that the number of accidents in Malaysia is one of the highest in the region. Thus, we at Rotaract Club of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS together with Rotary Club of Kinta feel that enough is enough, and it is a time to bring change to this issue. Thus, the idea to have the Road Safety Campaign in UTP. We feel that change needs to be done from within our community first. Thus, the UTP community as well as the public near UTP is the main target group for this event. We believe that if the message on the importance of Road Safety can get through to them, then they can be the agents that spread the importance of Road Safety to others.

Apart from advocating awareness on Road Safety, ROSEC also aims to build service relationships among Rotarians, Rotaractors and the community of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. This event is surely bound to enable the participants as well as the organizers to build a good working relationship. This is of great importance in ensuring the success of the event. Without a solid working relationship among both parties, there would be much to lose. Besides, this project will also help to integrate invaluable project management skills and leadership experience among the organizing committee in order to produce well-rounded graduates.

RACUTP in Triple-Do Celebration

Rotary Club of Kinta had just organized their annual "Triple-Do" Celebration on 2nd March 2010 at Hainan Chiken Rice Ipoh. So what is this Triple-Do all about? Actually it's a combination of 3 events, namely:
World Understanding Month
105th Anniversary of Rotary International
30th Anniversary of Rotary Club of Kinta

RACUTP was lucky enough that our Advisor, Rtn Arthur, invited us to join the celebration. It was a simple but pleasant dinner. The dinner started at 7.30pm with the warm welcoming speech by the MC, and ended at 10.00pm after the cake-cutting ceremony by the presidents (past + current) of Rotary Club of Kinta.

Well the dinner was actually a 3Triple Do Plus 1 Celebration, as we're also celebrating the birthday of Rtn Hamid Mydin PHF (Past President of Rotary Club of Kinta, 1989-1990)

India Tour - Thoughts and Memories (by Rtc. Vignesh)

I would like to tell you what I felt like, during the 7 day trip..
Nostalgic feelings filled our hearts and minds, when the Rotaractors of Malaysia, waved their hands at us, to say ‘bye’, while leaving home.

Those sweet memories surrounded us, for days, even after getting back to our routine. Each and every moment of this 7 day program was filled with fun and joy. It was something more than an Interclub exchange program can have. I would like to share some interesting moments that happened during their visit to India.

Going back to 10^th of December, we greeted them, “Selamat Datang!” and offered a garland to all the rotaractors and rotarian, as soon as we received them at the airport, symbolizing the culture of India. It was a different experience for them, and we realized that they all liked it, when they never removed it off, till night.

On 11^th December, we were anxious, while heading towards the house boat ride in Allepey! We were greatly satisfied when they admitted that, it was far better experience, than they expected it to be.

Most of the day went along with travelling from Allepey to Udumalpet on 12^th December. They had never faced such a long travel in their lifetime, until they came to India J. While I was in a fear that they’ll hate this trip, my secretary Vishnu ensured that, each and everyone who participated, never feel bored, till we reached the place. In-fact, it was a humorous journey.

The intensity of humor rose high the next day. The unforgettable galatta took place at a hotel, near Parambikulam guest house, where they were served with the recipe, “Chicken 65”. Tasting it for the first time, they all started fighting, to get atleast the last piece of chicken, in their dishes. We were struck by a series of surprises at the guest house, which made us roll on the floor laughing. Fortunately, all of them were friendly enough to consider them jovial.

Coming back to our hometown Coimbatore, all our club members joined us with eager, and stayed with us throughout the program. Now comes the serious part - Community service projects at children’s homes in Thudiyalur. Your people were equally serious in getting the things done. They were preplanned in everything. I would frankly say that, they were perfect! They had an eye for every minute details. Apart from the donations at the homes, they were also kind enough in sharing the money for buying the hearing aid machine for a small kid.

I’m sure that all the rotaract clubs of Coimbatore will share a set of pages ,for the pictures in their scrapbook, that were taken during joint meeting to send off them. In the saga of Saicons, this event will be a bookmark.

Neither the members of Saibaba Colony nor those of UTP will forget this period, at any point of time in their lives! I wish this relationship continues in future.

UTP ROTARACT CLUB INTERNATIONAL GOODWILL AND ECOTOUR PROGRAMME IN INDIA 10 – 16 DECEMBER 2009

UTP Rotaract Club organized a goodwill and ecotour programme to India from 10th – 16th December 2009. Ten students were involved in this programme together with a staff from Student Support Services Department as advisor. The group was also accompanied by the President of Kinta Rotaract Club, Ipoh. The objectives of this trip were to:

instil the awareness of serving the community, the needy and inculcating the spirit of generosity amongst the participants.
expose the participants to the poverty and famine prevalence in India.
promote ecotourism by travelling to nature areas and being responsible in conserving the environment and improving the well-being of local people.
explore the heritage and cultural diversity in India.
promote international understanding among the club members and Rotaractors from different districts.

The highlight of the trip was the community services done at 3 different orphanages which were Jeeva Jothi Trust Orphan Children Home, Douglas Memorial Children’s Home and Saranalaya Home. Various activities were also conducted with the orphanage children. Our students also donated stationeries, clothes, trunk boxes and other items to the children which they brought from Malaysia.

A visit to Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) was also carried out where the UTP delegation was warmly received by Rtn. Sundra Babu and Dr. Vadivel team and given a short presentation on the profile, vision, mission, objectives and some information on the on-going research which focuses on Agriculture. The UTP delegation was also informed that all relevant info pertaining to agriculture can be easily and freely obtained from the TNAU Agritech Portal. The portal address is www.agritech.tnau.ac.in.

After two days of visiting several interesting places in Kerala such as The Dutch Cemetery, Boat House and Athirappily Waterfall, the UTP team continued the journey to Tamilnadu. Meetings were also conducted with the local Rotaract Club of Udumalpet Gandhinagar and Rotary Club of Udumalpet.

The UTP delegation also carried out meetings with various Rotaract Club in Tamilnadu such as Rotaract Club of Saibaba Colony, Rotaract Club of Texcity and Rotaract Club of CUG. The highlight of the meeting was the donation from Rotaract Club UTP which was a hearing aid to an Indian child who had lost her hearing ability.

Overall, the trip was successful and had contributed to the greater global awareness among the students involved. Student Services would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all individuals, groups and organizations that have supported and contributed immensely towards the success of this event.

RAC-UTP 10th Installation Night

Rotaract Club of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (RAC-UTP) had their 10th Installation Night on the 31st of October 2009. It was a buffet-styled dinner held at Undercroft, UTP. The VIPs included: District Governor Rotarian Leslie Salehuddin; our club advisors Rotarian Arthur Yeong Chong Sen and Mr Zulkarnan Bin Abdul; and the District Rotaract Representative Rotaractor Sanjeev Kumar.
There were the usual speeches and performances and lucky draws, but nonetheless the night was fresh and fun. Also, with this, the incoming committees of RAC-UTP are officially installed as the HICOM and Board of Directors of RAC-UTP for the fiscal year of 2009/2010. Congratulations!

RAC-UTP 2nd Club Meeting

It was held in conjunction with the celebration of the festivals Deepavali and Hari Raya Aidilfitri. This is a long overdue post, mostly due to the difficult acquisition of the photos taken, as we know UTP does not have the best Internet connection in the world, and yours truly do not have a Facebook account to ease the acquisition.

On the 13th of September 2009, after much trouble and postponement, the RACUTP outgoing and incoming committee finally got to have their retreat at Teluk Batik. It was nothing of much fanciness, but more like a pleasant, simple outing involving 13 people. There should have been more, but the others were held up with various activities, thus they only have to bear with having missed a fun trip forever.

As a simple one-day outing, the activities involved were ordinary and direct, but nonetheless fun. The group took off from V2 café in the morning after a slight delay, and, having missed breakfast, we first headed for lunch at Kampung Cina, where much bonding took place.

Next we were off to the beach at Teluk Batik, where some games were to be carried out. However, after the jocular ice-breaking, the brainstorming and discussion of plans and activities for all the different avenues took a little too long, and the time for games were cut. The one game that was carried out was enjoyment enough, though. The half an hour of free time at the beach afterwards was plenty of fun for banter and bonding too, what with the guitar, a horse, and some ice-cream.

As it was still in the month of Ramadhan, we ‘broke our fast’ (although we had lunch) at McDonald’s at Setiawan, at which our group was so large, a special room had to be opened for us. Oh, what VIP treatment.

Afterwards was the highlight of the day (or night), as we went go-carting at Manjung Karting Circuit! Half of us were first-timers, but this sport/game is all about talent, and not for the weak.

“I never go-cart before, kind of nervous,” claimed the most worried first-timer, Ms. Sue Jane, who also turned out to be the champion of the night, racing neck-to-neck with the first runner-up, Ms. Xiao Ci, albeit after an accident.

RC Kinta Installation Night was held at Poyal Ipoh Club on 18th of August 2009. Our club advisor, Rtn Arthur Yeong was once again been installed as the RC Kinta President, and this makes him the President for the 2nd time.

Taken place on the 17th of August at Pocket D4, the Annual General Meeting of RACUTP proved to be a small and succinct one. The usual speeches--by Rotarian Arthur, then Jerry the President, followed by a guest speaker--were given, as well as reports by the head of the different departments.

Rotarian Arthur talked about the history of Rotary before moving onto his belief on the power of the human subconscious mind. Jerry mentioned the objectives of RACUTP and more or less told the members how the club stands out among others. The guest speaker, Mr. Marfauza, the Senior Executive of International Students of UTP, then expressed his views and opinion on the integration between people.

The Head of Departments then went on to give a small report on their respective departments, some also informing the members of any future plannings. That was a chance for the members to finally see who the people within the committee were, and what each of the departments actually does.

After all the formality, a former Rotaractor, Chester--and friends--gave a performance (and used his dry humour) to lighten up the meeting atmosphere--after which Mr. Marfauza was called upon to give an impromptu performance. He was sporting enough to take it on, and he rocked with a Nirvana song and his left-handed power chords!

The meeting was then adjourned with refreshments served outside the hall.

MMK July 2009

Minggu Mesra Kampus, aka MMK, is the week for UTP students, old and new, to get to know about the clubs and societies in the school, even though in reality it only lasts for three days. RACUTP, like most other clubs, participated in the week, which was from the 29th to 31st of July this semester, to promote the club and its goodness.

Apart from the people, the usual club information such as the history and organisation charts, and member registration, the booth had several main attractions, including free DotA matches, a T-shirt sale and a showcase of past activities. The free DotA matches were of course the most popular of all, gathering crowds at the booth.

The whole exhibition was running smoothly for all three days, until the sudden announcement of the close down of the school midway through the third day.

History of Rotary International

The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

Rotary's popularity spread, and within a decade, clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg, Canada. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents. The organization adopted the Rotary International name a year later.

As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving club members’ professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self.

By 1925, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members. The organization's distinguished reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other luminaries to its ranks — among them author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, and composer Jean Sibelius.

The Four-Way Test

In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:

Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotary and World War II

During World War II, many clubs were forced to disband, while others stepped up their service efforts to provide emergency relief to victims of the war. In 1942, looking ahead to the postwar era, Rotarians called for a conference to promote international educational and cultural exchanges. This event inspired the founding of UNESCO.

In 1945, 49 Rotary club members served in 29 delegations to the UN Charter Conference. Rotary still actively participates in UN conferences by sending observers to major meetings and covering the United Nations in its publications.

"Few there are who do not recognize the good work which is done by Rotary clubs throughout the free world," former Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain once declared.

Dawn of a new century

As it approached the 21st century, Rotary worked to meet society’s changing needs, expanding its service efforts to address such pressing issues as environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger, and children at risk.

In 1989, the organization voted to admit women into clubs worldwide and now claims more than 145,000 female members in its ranks.

After the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rotary clubs were formed or re-established throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The first Russian Rotary club was chartered in 1990, and the organization underwent a growth spurt for the next several years.

More than a century after Paul Harris and his colleagues chartered the club that eventually led to Rotary International, Rotarians continue to take pride in their history. In honor of that first club, Rotarians have preserved its original meeting place, Room 711 in Chicago’s Unity Building, by re-creating the office as it existed in 1905. For several years, the Paul Harris 711 Club maintained the room as a shrine for visiting Rotarians. In 1989, when the building was scheduled to be demolished, the club carefully dismantled the office and salvaged the interior, including doors and radiators. In 1993, the RI Board of Directors set aside a permanent home for the restored Room 711 on the 16th floor of RI World Headquarters in nearby Evanston.

Today, 1.2 million Rotarians belong to over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

History of The Rotary Foundation

In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.”

Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.

The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation’s growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

That year, the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships – was established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange , Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants .

The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for University Teachers . The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's peace and conflict studies programs .

Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. More than $70 million was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name.

Such strong support, along with Rotarian involvement worldwide, ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace.

RACUTP Intercultural Understanding Trip June 2009

It has always been a tradition of the International Service Avenue to organize overseas trip. We’ve been to Pune (India) in 2004, Singapore in 2006, Chiang Rai (Thailand) in 2007 and most recently to Jakarta and Yogyakarta (Indonesia) in December 2008.

Having gone to so many countries, we came to a question – why not go local for a fresh experience? And that’s when we decided on Sarawak for its cultural diversity and places of interests.

Unlike our previous community-service-only endeavors, we expanded our objectives by collaborating with the Professional Development Avenue and came up with the UNIMAS visit and nature trail at the Bako National Park.

11 Rotaractors begun their journey in Kuching on the 18^th of June despite the A(H1N1) scare. What we did there (besides having fun) were: community service at the Kuching Autistic Association (KAA), an educational visit to UNIMAS, jungle-trekking at the very beautiful Bako National Park and meeting up with fellow Rotaractors of District 3310.

9am marked the start of our visit to KAA [ Kuching Autistic Association ] on the 19^th of June. Mr Andrew and Mr Bernard gave us a short tour of the care center, which was previously belonged to the government.

As requested, we presented to them RM300 worth of products – a kettle and a vacuum cleaner - as well as stationeries from UTP and bags from RC KL. I could see why they needed those (the electrical appliances). Andrew shared with us that the center has been broken into 4 times in the last 7 months!

Bernard and Andrew guided us throughout the center, explaining stage by stage how they train the autistic children. It was eye-opening for some. There were students as old as 12 yet they were just starting to learn how to clothe themselves. We spent most of the time in a special room with various equipments aimed to evoke the autistic children’s senses – swings to calm agitated children down and slides to train focus of the eyes, just to name a few. At the end of the day, everyone was touched in a way or two.

By the 22^nd of June, we moved on to Sibu, where we visited a bona fide Iban longhouse, did community service at the Sibu Blind Center as well as experienced the affability of the Rotaractors of United Collge Sarawak (UCS).

The Sibu Blind Center benefited from the RM500 worth of paint and painting tools sponsored by RACUTP. Basically, some of us cleaned up the center while the rest of us were assigned to scrap old paint of the gate as well as to give the gate a fresh coat of paint.

Situated at Bukit Lima Road, the center provides the blind with a chance to serve the community as well as to feed themselves. Residents there were trained to weave rattan products, which is then sold to the public and the municipal council.

History of RACUTP

The Rotaract Club of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS was chartered on the 26th day of June 2000 by the Rotary Club of Kinta during the presidency of Rtn Arthur Yeong and the governorship of Allahyarham Dato' (Dr) Jaffar Mohd Ali.

Sometime in mid 1998, an ex-Interactor from the Interact Club of SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh named Chee Wei Liang called on Rtn Arthur who was the Rotarian Advisor to his Interact Club from 1996 to 1997. Wei Liang had by then become an undergraduate of UTP. Together with a few like-minded friends who were former Interactors and Leos from other States, he had wanted to continue to do service to his community and the idea for a Rotaract Club was formed.

Rtn Arthur was then the Director of Community Service in RC Kinta. The idea of chartering a Rotaract Club was not well received by the Rotary Board of Directors. "We already have 4 Interact Clubs". "We have not much experience with Rotaract Clubs". "Our last Rotaract Club of Goon's Institute closed down (because the Institute closed down)". "Who is going to travel all the way to Tronoh for their Meetings?". "An institution-based Rotaract Club has no continuity". "The New Generations Director is not prepared to do it".

These were some of the objections raised. Even Rotarians from outside RC Kinta and one Past District Governor tried to dissuade the charter of a Rotaract Club Tronoh.

However it was impossible to deny the enthusiasm of Wei Liang and his friends and say "No" to 30 names, NRIC numbers, addresses, handphone numbers, matriculation numbers and course names neatly written on one side of an A4 paper. There was also no stopping an idea whose time had come.

After several tentative Meetings of pro tem Board of Directors, some of which were not attended by the pro tem Rotarian Advisor who as usual had lost his way or could not tell the difference between a Universiti Sains Malaysia block and a UTP one, the provisional Rotaract Club of UTP was formed and started to carry out projects such as recruitment drives, visits to the Old Folks' Home in Jelapang, International Understanding Night and so on.

Chee Wei Liang, who was instrumental in forming the Club, became the Vice-President of that first Board of Directors. The first President was Beh Wei Liang.

What is Rotaract?

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they’re sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. As one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7,000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Purpose of Rotaract

The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.
